GOLF: Rory McIlroy recoils at Jon Rahm's DP Tour 'extortion' take
Rory McIlroy says Team Europe’s Ryder Cup momentum won’t be affected if Jon Rahm skips the 2027 event, praising the DP World Tour’s membership deal as fair. He also hailed Luke Donald’s return as captain as a major boost for the team’s continuity and chemistry.

Rory McIlroy weighed in on Jon Rahm’s criticism of the DP World Tour’s membership requirements, expressing confidence that Team Europe’s Ryder Cup preparations will continue smoothly, even if Rahm decides not to participate in 2027.
Rahm, while preparing for the LIV Hong Kong event, voiced his frustration with European golf authorities, who refused to release him from contractual obligations. Among nine LIV Golf players in similar situations, Rahm was the only one who did not accept the DP World Tour’s terms, reportedly including a $3 million fine and additional tour appearances.
“I don’t know what game they’re trying to play right now,” Rahm said. “It seems like they’re using our impact in tournaments, fining us, and trying to benefit both ways. It feels like extortion against players like me and younger golfers who have nothing to do with the politics of the game.”
McIlroy, who has played multiple European events after the PGA Tour season, offered a different perspective.
“Geez, in my opinion, it’s a really generous deal,” McIlroy said Wednesday at Bay Hill Golf Club in Florida, ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “It’s a much softer deal than what Brooks (Koepka) took to return to the PGA Tour. If you want to play in the Ryder Cup, you have to be a member of the DP World Tour and follow the rules. The rules are clear: if you break the media rights agreement and play in a conflicting event without a release, fines apply. Eight of the nine players accepted the solution offered to ease that burden while retaining membership. Jon is within his rights to disagree, but I think the deal is fair.”
Rahm, 31, could miss the Ryder Cup if the disagreement continues. He objected to contract conditions requiring a minimum of six events, with two specified by the DP World Tour.
McIlroy, however, believes this is a minor issue. “It’s really just agreeing to two extra events. That’s not a heavy lift,” he said. “The DP World Tour is protecting itself as a members’ organization and business. Any member would likely say the deal was generous, which is why eight of the nine accepted it. One player thinking differently is unfortunate, but it won’t stop the team.”
McIlroy also praised the return of Luke Donald as Team Europe captain, calling it a “huge advantage” for team continuity and chemistry.
“It’s wonderful to have Luke back. Every player and staff member involved with Ryder Cup Europe is thrilled he agreed to return,” McIlroy said.
While questions around Rahm’s participation remain, McIlroy emphasized that the Ryder Cup transcends individual players.
“The Ryder Cup is bigger than any one person. Players come and go, but the platform itself is what matters. We should all be grateful for the opportunity to showcase our skills and be part of something bigger than ourselves,” he said.
