Former Genesis Scottish Open champion Aaron Rai believes the redesigned layout at The Renaissance Club could provide a fresh challenge, saying the changes are more about the flow of the course than major alterations to its design.
This year's tournament features a rerouted layout, with the first seven holes now playing as the 10th through 16th, while the former 10th through 16th holes become the opening stretch. The eighth, ninth, 17th, and 18th holes remain unchanged.
Rai said the course itself has seen only minor modifications, including the addition of a few bunkers, but expects the new routing to change how players experience each round.
He said the revised layout groups some of the more demanding holes closer together while creating stretches that offer greater scoring opportunities. Rai believes the adjustment could improve the overall balance of the course and provide a more natural rhythm throughout the round.
The 31-year-old Englishman returns to North Berwick with renewed confidence after capturing his first major title at the PGA Championship in May. It marked another milestone in his career after previously winning the Genesis Scottish Open in 2020.
Since his breakthrough major victory, Rai has continued to post solid results, including a tie for 19th at the Memorial Tournament, a tie for 11th at the U.S. Open, and a tie for 30th at the Travelers Championship.
Rai said becoming a major champion has been a rewarding experience. After taking a short break to enjoy the achievement, he returned to competition with four consecutive tournaments before spending time back home in the United Kingdom with family and friends. He also attended Wimbledon during his visit.
With next week's Open Championship approaching, Rai said he is looking forward to returning to links golf, a style he considers one of the sport's greatest tests.
He said links courses demand creativity, shot-making, and adaptability because of changing weather conditions and the variety of ball flights and short-game options required. Rai added that those challenges are what make links golf especially enjoyable. -Field Level Media/Reuters
