The Atlanta Falcons are planning to use the franchise tag to retain tight end Kyle Pitts, according to multiple reports.

Pitts, 25, was set to become a free agent but will now earn approximately $16.5 million for the 2026 season, an amount based on the average of the top five salaries at his position.

According to NFL Network, the Falcons and Pitts will attempt to negotiate a long-term deal to avoid having him play the upcoming season under the franchise tag. The two sides have until July 15 to reach an agreement.

Selected fourth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Pitts has experienced an up-and-down career. His only 1,000-yard season came as a rookie, but he returned to form last season with 88 receptions for 928 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.

Under the new coaching staff led by Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, Pitts will remain a primary receiving option alongside wide receiver Drake London.

While the Falcons have not officially confirmed the move, Pitts is the first player reportedly franchise-tagged this offseason. The Dallas Cowboys may also use the tag on receiver George Pickens.

NFL teams have until March 3 to make franchise tag decisions.
