NEW YORK — The New York Knicks staged the largest comeback in NBA Finals history, rallying from a 29-point deficit to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 in Game 4 on Wednesday and move within one win of their first championship since 1973.
OG Anunoby delivered the decisive moment, tipping in Jalen Brunson’s missed three-point attempt with 1.2 seconds remaining to complete the dramatic comeback at Madison Square Garden.
Knicks coach Mike Brown praised Anunoby’s game-winning basket, calling it one of the most memorable plays in franchise history.
New York appeared outmatched early as San Antonio dominated the first half, setting an NBA Finals record with 14 three-pointers in the opening two quarters. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama led the charge, helping his team build a commanding lead before halftime.
The Knicks gradually fought their way back into the contest behind the efforts of Anunoby and Brunson. By the end of the third quarter, New York had trimmed the deficit to 15 points and continued its surge in the final period.
Brunson and Jose Alvarado hit consecutive three-pointers late in the fourth quarter to bring the Knicks within one point, setting the stage for Anunoby’s winning tip-in.
Brown credited Anunoby for responding to the challenge and making a crucial impact on the offensive glass. The coach highlighted the forward’s athleticism and determination, noting that his late offensive rebound ultimately secured the victory.
The win gives New York a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals. The Knicks will travel to San Antonio for Game 5 on Saturday, needing just one more victory to capture their first NBA title in more than five decades. -Reporting by Amy Tennery in New York; Editing by Thomas Derpinghaus/Reuters
