Shane McClanahan delivered another dominant outing, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon in St. Petersburg, Florida. The win marked Tampa Bay’s 10th consecutive home victory and continued their strong recent form.
McClanahan improved to 4-2 on the season after allowing just two hits while extending his scoreless streak to 16 2/3 innings over his last three starts. He struck out four batters and issued one walk, lowering his ERA to 2.60. His performance helped the Rays complete a six-game homestand sweep against the San Francisco Giants and Blue Jays, pushing the team to 12 wins in its last 13 games.
Offensively, Jonny DeLuca and Chandler Simpson drove in runs during a decisive fourth inning. DeLuca sparked the rally with an RBI double into the right-center field gap, scoring Jonathan Aranda after a leadoff walk. Simpson followed with an RBI single that extended Tampa Bay’s lead to 2-0.
Toronto starter Patrick Corbin took the loss, falling to 1-1 after allowing two runs on five hits across 5 1/3 innings. He also issued two walks and struck out one batter. The Blue Jays struggled offensively, managing only four hits while extending their losing streak to four games.
The Rays also received strong defensive support early, highlighted by a standout play from shortstop Taylor Walls, who made a sliding stop deep in the hole and fired a strong throw to retire Lenyn Sosa in the first inning with Kazuma Okamoto on second base.
McClanahan worked efficiently after allowing Okamoto’s double in the first inning, retiring 13 straight batters before giving up a double to Myles Straw in the fifth.
Reliever Kevin Kelly entered in the sixth after McClanahan issued a walk to Okamoto. Facing Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Kelly preserved the shutout with a deep flyout to left field to end the inning.
Tampa Bay added an insurance run in the eighth inning when a throwing error by second baseman Ernie Clement on a potential double-play ball allowed another run to score. The Blue Jays’ struggles continued in the seventh when reliever Garrett Cleavinger issued a wild pitch that advanced runners, though he recovered by striking out Yohendrick Pinango to escape the inning.
Rays pitcher Ian Seymour closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning to secure his first career save.
With the win, Tampa Bay continues its strong dominance at home and against American League opponents, improving to 14-4 in their repaired dome and 16-2 in league play. -Field Level Media/Reuters
