Ryan Vilade hit his first home run since joining Tampa Bay as the Rays extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Acquired in a trade with Cincinnati last November, Vilade delivered the early highlight of the night when he crushed a three-run homer in the first inning off Eric Lauer. With Chandler Simpson and Junior Caminero on base and no outs, Vilade reached a pitch below the zone and sent it 413 feet to left field for his second career home run, giving Tampa Bay an immediate 3-0 lead. He finished 1-for-2 and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the fifth inning.
The Rays continued to get production throughout the lineup. Jonathan Aranda stayed hot after his four-hit performance on Sunday, going 3-for-4 and improving to 9-for-13 over his last three games. Taylor Walls added a single and two RBIs, while Ben Williamson contributed two hits and a run scored.
On the mound, Nick Martinez earned the win after holding Toronto to one run on five hits over five innings. He struck out four, walked one, and threw 71 pitches to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Toronto responded in the third inning when Yohendrick Pinango and Kazuma Okamoto delivered back-to-back hits to spark a rally. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with an RBI single to bring in Pinango, cutting the deficit. The Blue Jays finished with 10 hits but managed only one run and one extra-base hit, struggling to convert opportunities against Tampa Bay pitching.
Eric Lauer took the loss for Toronto after allowing three runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking one. The Rays added insurance in the sixth when Walls delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to center off Mason Fluharty, extending the lead to 5-1.
Tampa Bay’s bullpen held firm from there. Ian Seymour worked out of a sixth-inning jam, and closer Bryan Baker sealed the win in the ninth, recording his ninth save in 11 chances after inducing a flyout from Okamoto with two runners on base.
