Jacob deGrom delivered a dominant performance on Sunday, striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings to lead the Texas Rangers to a 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs in Arlington, Texas. Evan Carter provided the decisive blow at the plate, launching a two-run home run in the eighth inning to secure the victory.
deGrom (3-2) allowed just three hits—two of them to Nico Hoerner—and did not issue a walk. The outing marked his 99th career win and his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. He previously struck out 10 batters in a 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 23.
The veteran right-hander bounced back strongly after a rough start in his previous outing, when he gave up six runs on seven hits, including two home runs, in a 7-4 loss to the New York Yankees.
Offensively, Josh Jung powered the Rangers with three hits in four at-bats, scoring two runs. His strong showing came a day after he also recorded three hits in Texas’ 6-0 win over Chicago.
Texas broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning after Jung was ruled safe at home following a play at the plate that survived a Cubs challenge. He had reached third on Joc Pederson’s double and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Alejandro Osuna.
The Rangers added insurance in the eighth inning when Jung singled for his third hit of the game before Carter connected on a 3-2 slider from Daniel Palencia, sending it over the right-field wall for his fifth home run of the season.
Jacob Latz closed out the win in relief, retiring the side in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to earn his fourth save of the season.
For Chicago, Ian Happ went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts, ending his career-best 30-game on-base streak. Jameson Taillon (2-2) allowed one run on four hits over 5 1/3 innings as the Cubs were shut out for the second straight game following a 10-game winning streak earlier in the season. -Field Level Media/Reuters
