Longtime manager Bob Melvin has returned to the Oakland Athletics as a special assistant in baseball operations.

The team announced Thursday that Melvin, 64, “will serve as an adviser to the front office on baseball matters.”

Melvin previously managed the Athletics from 2011 to 2021, leading the team to six playoff appearances and winning two American League Manager of the Year awards in 2012 and 2018.

Over his 22 seasons as a manager, Melvin compiled a record of 1,678 wins and 1,588 losses. He has also managed the Seattle Mariners (2003–04), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005–09), San Diego Padres (2022–23), and San Francisco Giants (2024–25).

The Giants let Melvin go after an 81–81 finish last season. He also earned National League Manager of the Year honors with Arizona in 2007, though none of his teams reached the World Series.
