Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly has undergone further testing, including a CT scan, on his back, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Tuesday.
Kelly was scheduled to pitch in a spring training batting practice session against Diamondbacks hitters on Saturday, but the session was canceled due to what was reported as mid-back tightness. He also underwent an MRI on Sunday.
An update on the severity of the injury is expected Wednesday.
"Anything is in play here, but Merrill works hard to keep himself in shape, so we're going to remain positive," Lovullo said.
Kelly, 37, went 12-9 with a 3.52 ERA in 32 starts for the Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers last season. He was traded to the Rangers at the deadline before re-signing with Arizona this offseason on a two-year, $40 million contract.
In seven major league seasons—most of them with Arizona—Kelly has a 65-53 record with a 3.77 ERA in 172 regular-season starts. In the 2023 playoffs, he went 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA, eight walks, and 28 strikeouts over 24 innings as the Diamondbacks reached the World Series, where they lost to the Rangers.
