The Miami Marlins designated veteran right-handed pitcher Chris Paddack for assignment on Tuesday following another difficult outing, and recalled right-hander William Kempner from Triple-A Jacksonville.

Paddack, 30, allowed seven runs on six hits and issued three walks over 2 2/3 innings in Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The performance came after a stronger outing last week against the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he gave up two runs across four innings.

In seven starts this season—his first with Miami—Paddack went 0-5 with a 7.63 ERA. Entering Tuesday’s action, he was tied for the major league lead with 26 earned runs allowed.

Across an eight-year Major League Baseball career, Paddack holds a 32-41 record with a 4.79 ERA in 125 appearances (116 starts). He has previously pitched for the San Diego Padres (2019–21), Minnesota Twins (2022–25), Detroit Tigers (2025), and the Marlins.

Kempner, 24, is expected to make his major league debut after being called up. He posted an 0-3 record with a 6.46 ERA in 12 relief appearances for Jacksonville this season, recording three saves and 34 strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings.

He was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft. -Field Level Media/Reuters
