Marie June Adriano debuted at the 20th Asian Games with a bronze medal in the women’s kumite -50kg in karate at the Toyohashi Gymnasium in Nagoya, Japan on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Human Kinetics student from Polytechnic University of the Philippines defeated Chinese Taipei’s Ya-chi Chung, 10-3.

Adriano defeated Cambodia's Srey Phea Chonn, 4-3, and South Korea's Yang Yewon, 4-0, before losing to Hong Kong’s Tsang Yee Ting, 4-5, in the semifinals.

Having lost to Chung in two previous encounters, Adriano made the necessary adjustments to finally beat her.

"I placed more trust in my technique – in the skills I brought with me and what I trained for this competition," Adriano said after giving the country a second medal in karate.

“It means so much to me. As a first-timer, the pressure was definitely intense. I am overjoyed to have been selected and to have won a medal for the Philippines," said the native of Llanera, Nueva Ecija.

The women's kata team of Rebecca Cyril Torres, Samantha Emmanuelle Veguillas, and Ysabielle Arrogante also bagged the bronze on Tuesday.
