After signing LeBron, Philadelphia 76ers trade Broome to Clippers for financial reasons

The Philadelphia 76ers traded second-year center/forward Johni Broome and a 2027 second-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for cash considerations on Tuesday.

The move allows the 76ers to remain below both the NBA's first and second salary cap aprons after signing four-time MVP LeBron James and guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Caldwell-Pope is expected to join Philadelphia after agreeing to a buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies, according to ESPN.

Caldwell-Pope's buyout was scheduled to be completed Tuesday, after which he will sign a one-year, $3.9 million contract with the 76ers, according to media reports.

The 2027 second-round pick involved in the trade will be the most favorable selection among several options: Houston, Indiana, Miami, or Oklahoma City; Golden State or Phoenix; or Philadelphia's own second-round pick.

Philadelphia selected Broome with the 35th overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft out of Auburn.

The 24-year-old Broome suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee on Feb. 21 while playing for the Delaware Blue Coats of the G League.

He appeared in 11 regular-season games as a reserve for the 76ers, recording 10 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks in 55 minutes. He also played eight minutes across two playoff games, contributing seven points, two rebounds, and one assist.

Caldwell-Pope, 33, previously played alongside James on the 2020 NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers and must clear waivers before officially signing with Philadelphia.

James, 41, and the 76ers announced Monday that the NBA's all-time leading scorer and four-time MVP had signed a two-year contract worth $8 million total at the veteran minimum.
