About Sofia Zarama

Sofía Zarama Valenzuela is the founder and lead consultant of Zaraval, a consulting firm specializing in city planning, sustainable transport, and energy transition. With more than 13 years of experience, she has advised governments, multilateral organizations, and private-sector stakeholders across Latin America and Africa on transport infrastructure financing, public transport modernization, and electromobility.

 

She previously served as Head of Planning at TRANSMILENIO S.A. in Bogotá, where she led the procurement and deployment of 1,485 electric buses, constituting one of the largest electric bus fleets in the world. In addition, she secured financing for 61.8 kilometres of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors and contributed to the development of innovative financing mechanisms for sustainable mobility projects. During her time at TRANSMILENIO S.A., she also delivered training programmes on electromobility for public transport authorities in the Dominican Republic (Intrant) and Africa (NaMATA), bringing a global and practice-oriented perspective to the sector.

 

Sofía holds a Law degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, an MSc in Cities from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a Master’s degree in Economic Analysis of Law and Public Policy from the University of Salamanca. She has also completed postgraduate studies in Health Economic Evaluation at the University of Oxford and in Electromobility at the University of Chile.
