New York City welcomed the New Year with a new mayor, as Zohran Mamdani was sworn in at midnight on Thursday, January 1.
The private ceremony, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, took place at the historic Old City Hall subway station, a striking architectural landmark with arched ceilings that has been closed since 1945.
Mamdani placed his hand on a Koran during the oath, marking a historic moment as the first Muslim leader of the nation’s largest city.
