VP Sara Duterte says EDSA rally reflects growing public dissatisfaction

Vice President Sara Duterte said the gathering at the EDSA People Power Monument reflected what she described as growing public dissatisfaction with the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

In a statement, Duterte said the demonstration echoed concerns she has been raising since 2024 regarding the government's leadership and its response to the country's economic problems.

“The people gathered in EDSA today reflect a growing sentiment that I have consistently expressed since 2024,” she said.

Around 10,000 protesters gathered near the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City, calling for greater accountability and transparency in government.

Duterte accused the administration of failing to respond adequately to rising prices, job insecurity, and the increasing cost of living, while claiming that President Marcos has become disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Filipinos.

She also alleged that the administration has used the justice system against its critics.

“It has weaponized the justice system by filing cases against and imprisoning individuals who dare speak out against alleged corruption and abuses in Malacañang, question the administration’s competence, or criticize the President, including allegations concerning his drug use,” Duterte said.

According to the Vice President, such actions threaten freedom of expression, democratic accountability, and political dissent.

She further argued that the President's "failures of character and leadership" have contributed to what she described as a more oppressive political climate.

“A government that answers criticism with intimidation undermines the very democratic institutions it is sworn to protect,” she said.

Duterte added that the issue extends beyond partisan politics, saying it concerns "the honor of the State" and the future of Filipinos who continue to face economic hardship.
