Trillanes backs possible Risa Hontiveros-Erwin Tulfo tandem for 2028 presidential elections

Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV has expressed support for a potential presidential ticket pairing Senators Risa Hontiveros and Erwin Tulfo in the 2028 elections.

In an interview with One News, Trillanes said he envisions a coalition between the Marcos administration and the so-called “middle forces” as a way to counter the bloc of Vice President Sara Duterte who has expressed her intention to run for president in the 2028 polls.

Under that arrangement, Trillanes said Hontiveros could serve as the coalition’s presidential candidate while Tulfo could be tapped as her running mate.

“Ang layunin ko po sana ay magsanib-puwersa yung administrasyon at itong middle forces,” Trillanes said.

“Ngayon, ang tinutulak naming pinuno sa middle forces ay si Senator Risa, so siyempre pagka nag-coalition, yung Vice President nasa administration, and I believe si Senator Erwin Tulfo would be a good match,” he added.

Trillanes also said he does not intend to run for public office in 2028 and instead plans to use his influence to help advance Hontiveros’ potential presidential bid.

Hontiveros previously disclosed that she is “preparing” and “seriously considering” to run for president in 2028 after former vice president and current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo announced that she would not seek the presidency.

Meanwhile, Tulfo has appealed to polling firms to stop including him and his brother, Raffy Tulfo, in early surveys for the 2028 presidential and vice-presidential races.

The senator said he and his brother were surprised to see their names appear anew in voter preference polls, particularly those pairing Raffy Tulfo with Sara Duterte.

“Ang gusto po ng brother ko and myself, sana po next time…huwag isama-sama yung mga pangalan po namin dyan…Eh ang plano lang po talaga namin, hanggang dito lang po kami sa Senado,” Erwin said in an earlier interview.
