President Marcos urges legislators to push measures protecting women and children

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. called on women lawmakers to continue advancing measures that protect women and children.

The President made the appeal as he reaffirmed his support for the Association of Women Legislators' Foundation Inc. (AWLFI) of the 20th Congress in its efforts to promote women’s empowerment and protection.

He delivered the message during the oath-taking ceremony of the group’s newly elected officers at Malacañan Palace on Tuesday, March 17.

"Let us work together. You have me as your ally. I have – I have in my life, certainly as you all know, my history, I’m surrounded by very, very strong women and I am very lucky for it," Marcos said in his speech.

He underscored the need to further improve societal structures to ensure women play a greater role in decision-making processes that shape their lives, careers, and future.

The President noted that while the Philippines remains among the stronger performers in Asia in terms of gender inclusion, significant challenges persist.

"For too many women and girls, the promise of opportunity remains distant—they are silenced by poverty, by violence, by traditions that deny women their rightful place," Marcos stressed.

"Yet we know this truth, that when woman have a chance to learn, to work, and to lead, she does not rise alone because she lifts with her, her family, her community, and that way, her nation," he added.

Marcos also reiterated his earlier statement at the United Nations, emphasizing that "women must always be included in the halls where decisions are made especially when those decisions affect women’s lives."

He urged AWLFI leaders to uphold the core values of public service, including excellence, integrity, and lasting commitment.

"Kaya’t sa mga bagong opisyal ng AWLFI, ipagpatuloy po ninyo ang pagbibigay-lakas sa ating mga kababaihan—mga ina, mga manggagawa, guro, lider, at mga batang babae na nangangarap ng mas maliwanag na kinabukasan (So to the new officers of AWLFI, please continue empowering our women—mothers, workers, teachers, leaders, and young girls who dream of a brighter future),"Marcos said, adding that this also includes overseas Filipinos who strive and work hard for their families and for the nation.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women and ensuring they are heard, respected, and empowered across sectors.

He also acknowledged that women remain underrepresented in governance and continue to face challenges in workforce participation. He cited that as of January, the Philippines ranked 86th globally in terms of women’s representation in national parliaments, slipping from 82nd place in December 2022.

On labor participation, Marcos noted that 50.7 percent of women were part of the workforce as of January, compared to nearly 74 percent of men.

He emphasized that empowering women requires sustained and comprehensive efforts—from improving access to education and employment to increasing representation in leadership and governance.
