President Marcos, Japanese Prime Minister support calls for de-escalation of tension in Middle East

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have agreed to coordinate efforts and support calls for the early de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East, focusing specifically on maintaining safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

During a 20-minute phone call on March 24, Takaichi underscored the importance of international cooperation to ensure secure passage through the Strait, a vital route for global oil shipments.

Marcos outlined the Philippines’ current stance and response measures, and both leaders committed to enhancing cooperation to ease regional tensions.

“We join calls for restraint, a de-escalation and cessation of hostilities… and for all concerned to return to the negotiating table—for peace,” the President said in a recent address before the United Nations. He also called for adherence to international law and the protection of civilians amid ongoing global conflicts.

This development follows the President's recent appeal for restraint, the cessation of hostilities, and a return to peace negotiations.

 Amid concerns over global oil supply risks, Marcos declared a state of national energy emergency on March 24 to mitigate potential disruptions and stabilize the country’s energy sector.

The Philippines continues to coordinate with strategic partners like Japan to secure oil supplies and promote regional stability.

Marcos has reaffirmed Japan as a "close friend and trusted partner" and remains committed to deepening collaboration with Takaichi across the Indo-Pacific.

The two leaders last met during the ASEAN Summit and related meetings in 2025.
