President Marcos honors father: 'Great man' whose lessons, ideals still guide me

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday honored his father and namesake, the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., as a “great man” whose lessons and principles continue to guide him in public service.

During the commemoration of the elder Marcos’ 109th birth anniversary in Batac City, Ilocos Norte, the President recalled how his father taught him the value of public service, leadership, and sacrifice.

He said his father taught him to stay on track and always do what is right, regardless of how difficult the circumstances may be.

“So, one lesson – immediately that I remember – was he would ever say, ‘Do not ever take the easy way out. Do what is right, no matter how difficult that may be,’” Marcos said.

He noted that his father’s approach to teaching life lessons was different, saying the late president preferred to “teach by example and by leadership.”

He said his father was already teaching and preparing him for life even during their ordinary conversations and the time they spent together.

He added that his father did not train him to become a prominent public figure or to attain the country’s highest political position.

“But he taught me about public service, and he always would say that nothing worthwhile is achieved without great sacrifice,” Marcos said.

“Perhaps the most important lesson that I learned from him was public service must be above your country and your countrymen. It is a principle that guided him throughout his life, for this service, as a soldier to his years in public office, and eventually as president.”

Marcos said the same principles continue to guide him as he carries the responsibilities of the presidency.

“I today carry the responsibilities of that office. But the same principles continue to guide me every single day. Because in every decision that we make, we must exercise judgment, put the national interest first, and ask what will best serve the Filipino people,” he said.

He emphasized that public service should always be centered on the country and its people.

“Because what we do in service of our people is not for ourselves. It is for the country. It is for the people,” he said.

During the event, Marcos offered a wreath at the monument of his father and led a series of activities commemorating his birth anniversary. (PNA)
