Philippines to continue engagement with Myanmar under its new President — Palace

Malacañang said the Philippines will sustain its engagement with authorities and key stakeholders in Myanmar following recent political developments, including the election of military leader Min Aung Hlaing as president.

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said the government has taken note of the development and will continue diplomatic efforts through the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“The Philippines will continue to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders in Myanmar through [Department of] Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro,” Castro said in a message to reporters.

Secretary Lazaro also serves as the special envoy of the  Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) chair to Myanmar, Castro noted, adding that Philippine embassies will remain actively involved in ongoing initiatives.

The Palace reiterated the country’s support for regional efforts led by the ASEAN to address the situation in Myanmar.

“The Philippines remains committed to support ASEAN’s collective efforts,” Castro said.

She also called for renewed momentum in implementing ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, which includes ending violence and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

The Palace said the Philippines will continue coordinating with regional partners to promote peace and stability in Myanmar.

Min Aung Hlaing was elected president in April 2026 through a parliamentary vote dominated by pro-military lawmakers, consolidating his hold on power five years after leading the a coup in 2021 that ousted the elected civilian government.
