Iranian Ambassador to the Philippines Yousef Esmaeilzadeh has expressed readiness to support the Philippines as the government seeks Iran’s assurance to classify the country as “non-hostile” and guarantee for the safe passage of Philippine-flagged vessels and oil shipments.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the commitment was conveyed during a meeting on Wednesday between the Iranian envoy, Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro, and Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Sharon Garin.

Castro described the discussions as notably warm and open, citing Iran’s willingness to cooperate. “We are highly optimistic about a favorable outcome,” she said.

She added, “Ambassador Esmaeilzadeh noted that they have been awaiting our outreach and reaffirmed their strong willingness to assist the Philippines with our specific requests.”

The Palace official also said both sides agreed to channel detailed requests through formal diplomatic processes to speed up action.

“Secretary Lazaro requested that Iran formally designate PH as a ‘non-hostile country’ and ensure safe passage for PH-flagged vessels and oil shipments. This is vital for the protection of our seafarers and our energy supply. DOE is finalizing the necessary details for immediate transmission,” Castro said.

Castro further noted that Lazaro is expected to speak with Iran’s foreign minister to secure the commitments at the highest level. She added that both Lazaro and Garin promptly reported the development to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
