Philippine Supreme Court Justice Singh supports formation of associations of women judges worldwide

NEW YORK, USA—Philippine Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Maria Filomena Singh expressed her support for forming associations of women judges worldwide.

Singh, President-elect of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), expressed this statement when she met with Elvira Azimova, Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The two judges met at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations in New York on March 10, the International Day of Women Judges, a global observance recognizing the role of women in strengthening justice systems .

According to a press statement issued by the Office of the Spokesperson of the Philippine Supreme Court, Azimova discussed the challenges women face in the legal field in her country.

She expressed interest in establishing a national association of women judges in Kazakhstan.

Singh welcomed the initiative and expressed support for forming national associations of women judges around the world.

Singh explained that under the IAWJ bylaws, at least 10 incumbent judges are required to form the core membership of a national association seeking affiliation with the organization. 

Associations may establish various classes of membership but not all members will have voting rights. 

She explained that the affiliation process with the IAWJ is straightforward: prospective associations only have to submit their bylaws for review by a special committee, and once approved, they must pay the required fees.
