The Philippines is exploring the acquisition of additional BrahMos cruise missile systems from India to strengthen its defense capabilities, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Teodoro made the remarks during the 3rd Delhi Defense Dialogue, where he joined discussions via video conference on regional security and defense cooperation.

The Philippines became the first foreign buyer of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system when it signed a PHP18.9-billion deal for three missile batteries in 2022, according to a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The missile platform is a key component of Manila's military modernization program and is intended to enhance the Armed Forces of the Philippines' coastal defense, sea control and anti-access/area-denial capabilities.

Teodoro said the government hopes to expand its inventory of BrahMos systems and has submitted proposed specifications to Indian authorities to better align future acquisitions with the country's operational requirements.

He described the acquisition as a reflection of the growing strategic partnership between the Philippines and India, adding that New Delhi's willingness to provide the capability demonstrates confidence in Manila as a responsible security partner.

Beyond missile procurement, Teodoro said the Philippines is also seeking deeper cooperation with India in the field of space technology.

He said discussions include possible collaboration with the Philippine Space Agency, with the country offering potential testing areas and local expertise for future projects.

Teodoro added that India could become a key partner in the Armed Forces of the Philippines' planned satellite acquisition program as Manila works to expand its space-based capabilities. Paraluman News with a report of Priam Nepomuceno/Philippine News Agency
