Palace: PH-Iran ties remain strong amid regional tensions

Malacañang on Monday said diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Iran remain strong as the government works to secure energy routes amid regional tensions.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Atty.Claire Castro made the statement during a Palace briefing.

“Nanatiling masigla ang ugnayan sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at ng Iran,” Castro said.

Earlier, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. instructed the Department of Foreign Affairs to engage Iranian officials on ensuring safe passage for Philippine-bound vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies.

Castro said Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has assured the DFA that Philippine-flagged ships, including those carrying fuel and Filipino nationals, will be allowed safe and peaceful transit through the strait.

She emphasized that the assurance is crucial not only for the safety of Filipinos traveling through the area but also for maintaining the country’s supply of essential resources.

“Matitiyak din nito ang tuloy-tuloy na delivery ng langis at fertilizer supplies sa Pilipinas,” Castro added.

The Palace official also said the government continues to closely monitor developments to safeguard Filipino citizens, with the President taking the lead in ensuring a stable oil supply.

“Makakaasa ang bawat isa na ang Pangulo ay mangunguna sa lahat ng mga hakbang upang mapanatili ang supply ng langis sa bansa,” Castro said.

Earlier, Marcos said the Philippines is also exploring alternative sources of petroleum products, particularly from non-traditional suppliers, to further strengthen energy security.
