On Araw ng Kagitingan, senator vows aid, projects for Pag-asa Island residents in West Philippine Sea

Senator Erwin Tulfo visited Pag-asa Island in Kalayaan, Palawan, for the commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan, and pledged significant government support and new development projects for the community.

Speaking before local officials, uniformed personnel, and civilians in Pag-asa Island in the West Philippine Sea, Tulfo said efforts are underway to improve facilities and provide livelihood assistance to the remote island community.

According to the senator, the key commitments include:

• Infrastructure: Funding will be sought under the 2027 General Appropriations Act for a new municipal building; a barangay health center is also slated for completion next year, with coordination through the Department of Health (DOH) to ensure it is fully stocked and supported by medical missions;

• Recreation: A Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facility, funded under the 2026 budget, will be established this year for both military personnel and civilians. It will feature a mini theater and activity areas;

• Livelihood Assistance: Through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), each family will receive ₱15,000 via the Sustainable Livelihood Program.

• Transportation: A free monthly boat service from mainland Palawan will be arranged to assist residents with travel and the transportation of goods.

These initiatives aim to improve the quality of life for residents and stationed personnel while recognizing their vital role in the West Philippine Sea.

Tulfo said the DSWD, through Secretary Rex Gatchalian, will scheduled to distribute the P15,000 family cash assistance in the coming days.

Tulfo suggested to the residents that they can pool together the cash assistance to establish a small trading outpost that would supply basic goods such as food and household items.
