The International Criminal Court (ICC) is scheduled to open the trial of former President Rodrigo Duterte on Nov. 30, where he faces charges of crimes against humanity over alleged extrajudicial killings during his administration’s anti-illegal drugs campaign.
During the opening session, presiding judges will formally read the charges and ask Duterte to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. Opening statements will then follow from the prosecution, legal representatives of the victims, and the defense counsel.
The case centers on allegations of murder and attempted murder linked to state-backed anti-drug operations between Nov. 1, 2011, and March 16, 2019, spanning Duterte’s time as mayor of Davao City and his presidency.
Ahead of the trial, Duterte waived his right to attend the ICC’s Nov. 2 status conference, authorizing his defense team to represent him during discussions on procedural matters and final trial preparations.
The trial proper follows the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber's earlier confirmation of charges against the former Philippine leader.
