Brazil-Venezuela border remains open following US attack

Brazil's border with Venezuela in Pacaraima, in the Roraima state, remains open but under military supervision on Monday (January 5), following the United States' attack on Caracas in order to capture deposed president Nicolas Maduro.

Brigadier General Roberto Pereira Angrizani said the flow of migrants from Venezuela to Brazil had gone down in recent days and that there was no need for troop reinforcements.

Defense Minister Jose Mucio reported on Saturday (January 3) that Brazilian Army soldiers are monitoring the situation on Brazil's side near the border markers, with 2,300 of Brazil's 10,000 Amazon region troops stationed in Roraima.

On Saturday, Mucio participated in a videoconference with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at Itamaraty Palace to discuss the U.S. operation which Lula has condemned calling for a response from the United Nations.
