Atty. Renato Bantug Jr. was officially presented on Tuesday as the new Senate Secretary during an inter-agency coordination meeting held in preparation for the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA).

In his remarks, Bantug acknowledged the House of Representatives for inviting him to the meeting, noting that he did not expect to return to the chamber under what he described as unusual circumstances.

“I wasn’t given much time to miss all of you. So whether you like it or not, I’m back,” Bantugadded.

He also expressed his appreciation to both House officials and representatives from the Executive branch for the coordination efforts leading up to the upcoming SONA.

“I would like to thank our friends and colleagues at the House of Representatives for graciously hosting this first coordination, and our guests from the Executive Department. I would like to thank you for sending me the invitation to be here again,” Bantug added.

Bantug assured participants that the Senate would fully cooperate with preparations to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual presidential address next month.

Meanwhile, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano questioned Bantug’s appointment, describing him as not the “legitimate” Senate Secretary and accusing Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian of allegedly “usurping” authority.

Cayetano maintained that he remains Senate President until 13 senators formally elect a replacement.

On the other hand, Malacañang and House leaders have recognized Gatchalian’s leadership following the June 3 Senate leadership change.

The House of Representatives and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines also said the Senate session that installed Gatchalian was valid, citing a Supreme Court ruling that allows a quorum of fewer than 13 senators when some members are deemed unable to attend.

House officials also said this year’s SONA will be simplified. According to House Secretary General Cheloy Garafil, there will be no red carpet or long gowns, with attendees encouraged to wear simple Filipiniana attire.

She added that preparations are aimed at maintaining a “simple but dignified” event.
