Back to work: PH Senate minority welcomes Gatchalian leadership

Members of the newly formed minority bloc returned to work on Wednesday, June 17, and formally recognized the Senate leadership headed by Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian.

Gatchalian assumed the Senate presidency after securing 13 votes, with Senator Joel Villanueva casting the deciding vote that gave the new leadership the majority.

Senator Loren Legarda described the transition as lawful and in accordance with Senate procedures, saying the minority bloc is prepared to work with the new leadership.

"We welcome, we recognize, and congratulate the new leadership who are dear friends, who are competent public servants and we, in the minority, as I remain to be in the minority, will collaborate for the good of the Philippine government."

Legarda emphasized that legislative work would continue regardless of the leadership change.

"The work has never stopped. The work never stops and the work will never stop."

She also extended her congratulations to Gatchalian, Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente Sotto III, and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri.

For his part, Senator Christopher "Bong" Go said senators should now look ahead and focus on their duties following the leadership transition.

"Majority rules. This is a collegial body. Tapos na po, so let's move on with the new leadership, with the new majority. This is democracy, ganun naman talaga."

Go reiterated that his priority remains public service. "Ako naman, kilala niyo po ako, gusto ko lang po magtrabaho."

Senator Imee Marcos, who was present for the convening of the Commission on Appointments, likewise indicated that lawmakers are focused on getting back to work under the new Senate leadership.
