Staff in Munich's hot kitchens and beer gardens are battling extreme conditions as a heatwave grips the southern German city, with temperatures expected to reach more than 32 degrees Celsius (89,6 degrees Fahrenheit) in the coming days.
In the beer garden of the Bamberger Haus, chicken halves turn over open flames, with grill temperatures reaching around 300 degrees Celsius (572 degrees Fahrenheit). Combined with deep-fat fryers and other ovens, the heat builds up in the serving area.
Beer garden manager Sascha Meyer is sweating profusely: 'It must be nearly 50 degrees (Celsius) (122 degrees Fahrenheit) already, because the air's stagnant here – there's hardly any airflow.'
For the staff, this means drinking plenty of fluids and taking the odd break to cool down.
The German Meteorological Service does not foresee a return to cooler temperatures anytime soon, with a potential of the thermometer rising up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in some parts of Germany.
