KAMPALA, Uganda — Kampala has confirmed two additional Ebola cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to seven, the health ministry said on Monday.

The newly confirmed patients are both Ugandan health workers at a private medical facility in the capital. Authorities said both individuals have been admitted to a designated treatment center and are currently receiving care.

Health officials added that response teams are actively tracing all contacts who may have been exposed to the two patients to prevent further spread of the virus.

On Saturday, Ugandan authorities had already confirmed three additional cases as part of the ongoing outbreak response.

The epicenter of the outbreak is linked to the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ituri province, which shares a border with Uganda.

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday that more than 900 suspected cases have been recorded so far, including 101 confirmed infections across the outbreak area.
