Senator Mark Villar wants to address rising cases of chronic kidney disease in PH

Senator Mark Villar filed a resolution seeking an inquiry into the growing prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the Philippines.

In Senate Resolution No. 313, Villar cited alarming data from the Department of Health showing that CKD is increasingly affecting younger age groups.

“Ayon sa Department of Health, pabata nang pabata ang tinatamaan ng CKD sa bansa—may reports din po tayong natatanggap na nine years old pa lang ay may malubhang sakit na agad sa bato,” Villar said.

While the Philippine government has existing programs aimed at addressing CKD, Villar said significant gaps remain, especially in prevention and early detection.

He pointed to the growing consumption of ultra-processed foods and major changes in dietary habits as contributing factors to the prevalance of CKD.

“Naghain po tayo ng resolution na ito dahil naniniwala tayo na sa panahon ngayon, hindi na lang dapat basta reactive ang ating mga hakbang laban sa CKD,” he added.

Through the proposed Senate inquiry, Villar seeks a thoroug review of the government’s current policies, programs, and services related to CKD.

“Gusto natin na mas magkaroon ang gobyerno ng napapanahon na solusyon sa CKD. We would like to be more proactive in preventing and detecting the disease while fully supporting those who are undergoing treatments,” Villar underscored.

He emphasized that a more comprehensive, preventive, and patient-centered approach is necessary to curb the rising incidence of CKD and reduce its long-term burden on the healthcare system.

The resolution is expected to prompt discussions in the Senate on strengthening public health strategies, improving access to early diagnosis, and enhancing support mechanisms for CKD patients nationwide.
