Actress-producer Julia Montes shared how she helped her deaf mother navigate everyday challenges as she received  recognition from the Philippine Association of the Deaf, Inc. (PADI) for supporting the Filipino deaf community.

Julia received the certificate on October 17 as part of PADI’s centennial celebration.

In an Instagram post, Julia shared, “Growing up with a deaf mom, I experienced firsthand what it means to be her voice and ears in our everyday lives.

“From helping her communicate with other people to protecting her from judgment, discrimination, and bullying, it was never an easy journey.”

Julia, 31, also recalled the heartbreaking moments when she witnessed others mock and mistreat her mother because of her deafness.

“I remember crying for my Mama because of how other people treated her. There was even a time when I didn't want to be seen with her—not because I was ashamed of her, but because hearing people whisper, laugh, and mock her broke my heart. As a child, I couldn't understand why people could be so unkind to someone simply because she couldn't hear or speak like they did.”

Those experiences left a lasting mark on Julia. She learned to be more compassionate, patient, and understanding. It also strengthened her belief that people with disabilities deserve equal respect and should never be made to feel inferior because of their condition.

“People with disabilities may have different abilities, but they are no less than anyone else,” Julia emphasized. “They have the same feelings, dreams, dignity, and right to be treated with kindness and respect.

"Let us never belittle someone because of their disability. Instead, let us learn to understand, include, and respect them.”

Julia expressed her gratitude to PADI for the recognition, describing it as one of the most meaningful honors she has received.

She dedicated the award to her mother, whom she affectionately addressed in her message. “Mama, this one is for you. You may not hear the words I say, but I hope you always feel how proud I am to be your daughter.”

Julia also thanked PADI for its longstanding commitment to serving and advocating for the deaf community as the organization celebrated 100 years of service.

“Deafness is not a limitation to being loved, respected, and valued,” she affirmed.
