The Philippine government is exploring alternative energy sources, including the expansion of renewable energy, to mitigate the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The Palace stated that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to transitioning toward cleaner power.
According to Claire Castro, Undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Office, discussions regarding these energy alternatives have been prioritized in response to escalating regional tensions.
“Matagal na po itong pinag-uusapan, lalo na po noong nangyari itong sigalot sa Middle East. At sinasabi nga rin po ni (Department of Energy) Secretary Sharon Garin na dapat nating palawakin, palakasin ang renewable energy – isa po ito sa talagang tinutukan po ng gobyerno,” Castro said when asked about the administration’s long-term plans.
She added, however, that nuclear energy has not yet been taken up as part of the government’s current discussions.
“Wala pa pong napag-uusapan patungkol po doon,” Castro said.
On March 24, Marcos issued Executive Order No. 110, declaring a state of national energy emergency due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The order cites significant risks to the global oil supply and transport.
It notes that continued instability in the region could disrupt international petroleum production and distribution.
This remains a primary concern for the Philippines, given the country's heavy reliance on imported oil.
