DOE assures PH has sufficient fuel supply amid global energy crisis

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin recently assured the public that there is a sufficient energy supply based on current inventories of major petroleum products.

During a Palace briefing following the third Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) Committee meeting, Secretary Garin noted that supply management efforts are aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directives.

The country currently maintains an average 50-day supply of petroleum products, specifically:

• Kerosene: 105 days

• Gasoline: 54 days

• Diesel: 49 days

• LPG: 36 days

“The lowest right now is at 36 days of LPG but yesterday (Monday) we confirmed an order together with PNOC (Philippine National Oil Company) and our oil companies na nangangailangan and we have made an order, additional order yesterday morning and I think we will reach about 50 days by today also on average,” she said.

Garin noted that while current supply levels remain stable, they could be affected by global developments, particularly tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and international oil availability.

“Maganda pa naman ‘yung supply level natin, but that all depends also on what will happen with the Strait of Hormuz, ano ang availability sa ibang countries. Pero magandang number ito kasi sa number na ito, binibigyan tayo ng 50 days to make the replenishment. Hindi mauubos ito pagka after 50 days. Ang ibig sabihin nito, makakahanap tayo habang kinokonsumo natin within the 50 days,” the DOE chief said.

She said the Department of Energy is accelerating efforts to expand renewable energy sources, including rooftop solar and net metering, to reduce dependence on imported oil.

Garin also urged the public to help manage demand by conserving electricity and fuel in their daily activities at home and in the workplace.
