Vice President Sara Duterte’s legal team denied ever considering her resignation as her impeachment trial proceeds.

Defense spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa on Wednesday (July 22, 2026) stated that stepping down has never been discussed within Duterte's camp.

His remarks came in response to comments from Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon, who suggested the Vice President should not resign because the trial has yet to reach "the most exciting part."

“I will not respond to Rep. Ridon’s comment because... he’s entitled to his own opinion, and I respect it, whether it’s for or against us,” Poa said in a mix of English and Filipino during a press conference. “We have never discussed the resignation of our Vice President, so I don’t think we even have to address that issue.”

Ridon’s statement was made during a separate press briefing after reporters asked if Duterte might consider stepping down.

Despite the unclear origins of the resignation rumors, Ridon emphasized that the House prosecution panel would pursue the impeachment case regardless of whether Duterte remains in office.

The Senate impeachment court recently wrapped up the House prosecution's presentation of evidence for Article IV of the impeachment complaint against the Vice President.
