VANCOUVER — Qatar national football team head coach Julen Lopetegui refused to make excuses after his side suffered a 6-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada national football team in their FIFA World Cup Group B match on Thursday, a game marked by two red cards and a serious injury to a Canadian player.

Qatar, who earned their first point of the tournament in a 1-1 draw with Switzerland national football team in their opening match, were already under pressure after falling two goals behind within the first 30 minutes in Vancouver.

The match turned further against Qatar following a series of disciplinary issues. Homam Ahmed was sent off for a foul, before Assim Madibo received a second red card for a heavy challenge on Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné, who suffered a suspected broken leg.

Speaking after the match, Lopetegui said he had no intention of focusing on external factors such as officiating, instead emphasizing responsibility and recovery.

“I have two options,” Lopetegui said at a news conference. “One is to start talking here about the referee or the things that happened, or I can put the focus on the only thing that is under my control, which is to recover my players.”

He added that the team must regroup quickly ahead of their final group stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team.

The Spanish coach also insisted there was no malicious intent behind Madibo’s challenge on Koné and extended his best wishes for the midfielder’s recovery.

“When we drew against Switzerland, I was not in the sky, I was balanced. And today, too, I have to analyse the match to take the right decisions for the next match,” he said.

Tensions flared after Koné’s injury and again at full-time, with confrontations involving players and staff from both sides. However, Lopetegui declined to comment on the incidents, saying only that responsibility must be taken by all involved.

“It is not good to finish in this way for all the football players, for all the staff, and I think that we have to avoid this moment,” he said.

Despite the heavy defeat, Lopetegui stressed that Qatar still have one final opportunity to finish their group campaign on a positive note.
