Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan has filed a Senate resolution honoring Filipino-American basketball player Jordan Taylor Clarkson for his landmark achievement in the 2026 NBA Championship Finals, where he became the first player of Filipino descent to win an NBA title.
Filed on Wednesday, June 17, Proposed Senate Resolution No. 463 seeks to formally recognize Clarkson’s outstanding performance and his key role in the New York Knicks’ championship run.
“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, as it hereby resolved, that the Senate of the Philippines congratulate and commend Jordan Taylor Clarkson for his historic win in the 2026 NBA Championship Finals, making him the first Filipino NBA Champion, cementing Filipino achievements in the hallowed history of the NBA, and paving the way for future generations of Filipino athletes,” the resolution read.
The measure also described Clarkson as a highly accomplished Filipino basketball figure, citing his contributions to Gilas Pilipinas during the 2018 Asian Games and the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Clarkson is recognized as “one of the most successful Filipino basketball players in history,” the resolution added.
Pangilinan further emphasized Clarkson’s impact on the New York Knicks, noting his role as a combo guard and primary playmaker who helped provide offensive stability and veteran leadership throughout a tightly contested five-game series against the San Antonio Spurs.
The Knicks secured the championship with a 94–90 win in Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals on June 13, ending a 53-year title drought for the franchise.
The resolution also highlighted Clarkson’s strong connection to his Filipino heritage, tracing it through his Filipino-American mother, Annette Tullao Davis, and his grandmother, Marcelina Tullao Kingsolver of Bacolor, Pampanga, who helped shape his cultural identity.
It added that Clarkson’s father has spoken about how his connection to his Filipino roots has influenced his personal journey and professional success.
Beyond basketball, Pangilinan also praised Clarkson’s efforts in supporting Filipino youth and contributing resources toward grassroots basketball development in the Philippines.
The senator said the resolution reflects his broader push to promote sports development, empower young athletes, and celebrate Filipino talent on the global stage.
