Not exactly llike Ondoy's: August 17 rains in Quezon City came in 'surges,' not relentless — PAGASA

Although a significant amount of rainfall was recorded in Quezon City on Monday, the pattern was distinct from the downpours that submerged the area during Tropical Cyclone Ondoy in 2009, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
PAGASA’s Science Garden station in Quezon City recorded 201.7 mm of rainfall over a five-hour window from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday. In contrast, the same station recorded 455 mm of rainfall over 24 hours during Ondoy on September 26, 2009.
"Heavy rainfall was continuous for about six hours during Ondoy, reaching 341 mm within that six-hour frame in Quezon City," PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
Servando noted that Monday’s weather pattern was characterized by surges rather than relentless, steady rainfall.
"There was a surge of heavy rainfall during that five-hour window, which weakened after an hour before another surge occurred at around 2:00 p.m.," Servando explained.
PAGASA forecasts that the prevailing southwest monsoon (habagat) will continue to bring heavy rains across large parts of the country, particularly Luzon and Western Visayas.
The public and disaster monitoring offices are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against flash floods and landslide.
