Russian ballistic missiles and drones struck Kyiv and several other parts of Ukraine early Sunday, killing at least six people and injuring dozens, while Russian-installed officials said Ukrainian drone attacks also killed four civilians in occupied territory.
Ukraine's air force said Russia launched seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones overnight. The attacks damaged residential areas and civilian infrastructure across multiple regions.
In the northern city of Chernihiv, a Russian drone hit a supermarket, killing two people, including a 9-year-old child, and injuring 25 others, according to Ukraine's emergency services.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attacks, calling them "deliberate Russian terror" with no military justification.
In Kharkiv, a daytime Russian drone strike killed one person and left 16 others needing medical treatment, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.
Meanwhile, in Zaporizhzhia, Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said a Russian glide bomb attack killed one person and wounded six others.
Kyiv also sustained damage from overnight missile strikes. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a fire broke out on the seventh and eighth floors of a high-rise apartment building in the city center. Three people were injured, while emergency responders extinguished fires that also engulfed several vehicles.
In Sloviansk, located in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, state energy company Naftogaz said two of its employees were killed while helping residents affected by an earlier Russian strike.
Zelenskiy had warned on Friday that Russia was expected to intensify its attacks over the following 48 hours.
Russian-installed officials also reported civilian casualties in occupied areas of eastern Ukraine. In Horlivka, a city in the Russian-controlled part of Donetsk region, Moscow-appointed Mayor Ivan Prikhodko said a Ukrainian drone strike killed four civilians. He later reported that another drone hit an emergency vehicle, injuring three medics and one resident.
A day earlier, Russian-installed authorities accused Ukraine of targeting civilians after a drone strike killed 12 people at a holiday camp in the Russian-occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians during the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The conflict has claimed thousands of civilian lives, with most of the casualties occurring in areas struck by Russian attacks. -Reporting by Reuters; Editing by Peter Graff, Edmund Klamann and Ron Popeski/Reuters
