Israeli attacks in Gaza kill six people, including a girl, medics say

CAIRO — Israeli attacks killed at least six people across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, including a 9-year-old girl, Palestinian health officials said, as mediators continued talks aimed at preserving the U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

According to medics, Israeli gunfire struck a tent encampment on the eastern side of the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, killing 9-year-old Tala Abu Matar. The Israeli military said it was not aware of the reported incident.

In Gaza City, an Israeli airstrike on a metal foundry in the Sabra neighborhood killed four people. Witnesses said the site was struck by three Israeli missiles.

The Israeli military said the strike targeted Hamas militants operating inside a weapons production facility, which it described as a violation of the ceasefire by the militant group.

Separately, the military said its forces had killed at least two Hamas fighters in northern Gaza since Thursday, alleging they were planning attacks on Israeli troops.

Later on Sunday, another Israeli strike hit a tent encampment in the Mawasi area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killing at least one person and injuring several others, including children, according to medics.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike.

The ceasefire, agreed upon in October 2025, ended large-scale fighting in Gaza but has not stopped Israeli military operations. Palestinian health officials say more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the truce took effect, while Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza during the same period.

The latest violence comes as Hamas leaders met in Cairo for further negotiations on implementing the second phase of U.S. President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan.

According to sources familiar with the talks, discussions have focused on Hamas disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza. However, the negotiations remain deadlocked, with no breakthrough reported.

Hamas has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, saying the continued military operations have become a major obstacle to advancing the next phase of the agreement.

Nearly all of Gaza's approximately 2 million residents have been displaced multiple times since the war began. Most are now living in makeshift tents or damaged buildings along a narrow coastal strip under Hamas control.

The conflict began after Hamas-led fighters launched a cross-border attack into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people, according to Israeli figures.
