Crew-11 astronauts hail emergency response after early return from ISS

Astronauts from SpaceX’s Crew-11 mission said on Wednesday (January 21) that a swift, coordinated response by NASA and SpaceX enabled their safe early return from the International Space Station after a serious but undisclosed medical issue affected one crew member.

Speaking at a press conference at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Crew-11 commander Zena Cardman said the four-member crew returned to Earth earlier than planned but declined to identify the astronaut involved or provide details of the medical condition, citing privacy concerns.

“What I will say is I’m deeply proud of the way our crew came together,” Cardman said, praising flight controllers, medical teams and support staff on the ground and in orbit for working together to minimize risk to the crew, the spacecraft and the ISS mission.

Crew-11 pilot Mike Fincke said the medical situation arose as the crew was preparing for a spacewalk, triggering an emergency decision to return to Earth.

“How we handled everything … really bodes well for future exploration,” Fincke said, expressing optimism as NASA prepares for upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon.

Fincke acknowledged the crew’s return about a month early would slightly affect the space station’s schedule but said critical work was not missed and plans were adjusted smoothly until the arrival of the next crew rotation.

He also highlighted the role of onboard medical tools, including a portable ultrasound device, which he said proved invaluable during the emergency and should be standard for future spaceflights.

The decision to bring all four members of Crew-11 home a few weeks ahead of schedule was announced January 8, with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman saying one of the astronauts faced a "serious medical condition" that required immediate medical attention on the ground.

Their SpaceX capsule splashed down in the Pacific off California on January 15, capping a 10-hour-plus descent from the space station and fiery re-entry through Earth's atmosphere.

It was the first time that NASA has cut short the rotation of an ISS crew due to a health emergency.
