North Korea's Kim Jong Un attends New Year celebrations with daughter

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un celebrated New Year’s in Pyongyang with fireworks, patriotic performances, and his daughter Ju Ae by his side, calling for national unity ahead of the upcoming 9th Workers’ Party Congress. The celebrations also included meetings with military families and loyal workers.

PYONGYANG — North Korea’s state-run television on Thursday (January 1) aired about an hour-long footage showing leader Kim Jong Un attending New Year’s celebrations in Pyongyang, which featured fireworks, a countdown, patriotic songs, and traditional dances.

Kim’s daughter, Ju Ae, who some analysts see as a potential successor, joined him during the festivities. The two were seen hugging and kissing children on their cheeks, sitting together, and holding hands.

In his speech, Kim praised the North Korean people, saying that he and the citizens “can feel proud that they boosted the strength and dignity of our country in 2025.” He also called for national unity ahead of a major party congress expected in early 2026, which is set to outline the country’s future direction.

North Korea is anticipated to soon hold the 9th Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, where officials are expected to present plans for the next five years, covering areas such as nuclear and weapons development as well as economic policies.

During the celebrations, Kim and his daughter also met families of commanding officers leading North Korean troops supporting Russia in the war in Ukraine. They later delivered another speech at a state banquet attended by North Korean workers chosen for their loyalty.
