Loren Legarda

Senator Loren Legarda, the longest-serving female senator in Philippine history, has a career spanning four terms in the Senate and a term in the House of Representatives. 

Throughout her tenure, she has authored and championed landmark legislation aimed at advancing inclusive, sustainable, and resilient national development.

Beyond local governance, Legarda is an internationally recognized voice in climate action, cultural preservation, and indigenous rights.

Her legislative career is marked by several historic firsts, including being the only woman to top two separate senatorial elections (1998 and 2007) and the first female legislator to serve as Senate Majority Leader.

In the current Congress, the 20th, she holds crucial committee chairmanships, including the Committee on Culture and the Arts; the Committee on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education; and the Committee on National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification, and Reconciliation, where she serves as the first female Chairperson. 

She also helps guide national policy as the Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Finance, building on her previous roles as Senate President Pro Tempore in the 19th Congress and Deputy Speaker representing the Lone District of Antique in the 18th Congress.

Legarda also plays a central role in shaping the nation's budgets and education policy, particularly on the ₱6.793-trillion General Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2026 and securing the historic ₱1.34-trillion allocation for education.

Legarda, a pioneering environmental advocate, has successfully institutionalized climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) into Philippine law and global frameworks.

Her work has effectively shifted the geopolitical focus toward enhanced community-level climate action.

Parallel to her environmental focus, Legarda is a fierce protector of cultural heritage and the creative sector.

She was conferred the patron of arts and culture award, the Dangal ng Haraya Award, the highest honor given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
