Alan Peter Cayetano

Senator Alan Peter Schramm Cayetano is a veteran lawyer and lawmaker with over three decades of experience spanning the local, executive, and legislative branches of the Philippine government. Popularly known as "Compañero," he currently serves as the Senate Minority Leader.

Cayetano’s political career began at age 21, serving as one of the country's youngest councilors before becoming the Vice Mayor of Taguig. 

He later transitioned to national politics, authoring landmark legislation such as the Iskolar ng Bayan Act of 2014 (RA 10648), the University of the Philippines Charter Act of 2008 (RA 9500), and the law extending Philippine passport validity to 10 years. 

Known for his anti-graft efforts, he also spearheaded high-profile Senate investigations into major corruption scandals, including the NBN-ZTE deal and the Fertilizer Fund Scam.

He served a notable one-and-a-half-year tenure as the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, where he championed an independent foreign policy, modernized the passport system, and enhanced protections for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). 

For his diplomatic service, he was awarded the Order of Sikatuna, Rank of Datu (Grand Cross, Gold Distinction) in 2018. He was also named an Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) awardee in 2010 for his public service.

A second-generation politician, he is the son of the late Senator Renato "Compañero" Cayetano and Sandra Schramm. He comes from a prominent political family: his sister, Pia, is a fellow Senator; his wife, Lani, is the current Mayor of Taguig; and his brother, Lino—a film director and former Taguig Mayor—serves as the General Manager of the People's Television Network.

Cayetano earned his political science degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1993 and his Juris Doctor from the Ateneo School of Law in 1997, graduating as a silver medalist before passing the Philippine Bar in 1998 (the same year he renounced his US citizenship).
