A fatal train crash on Tuesday (December 30) near Peru's iconic Machu Picchu has left the driver dead and injured 40 others, including foreign tourists.
Eyewitness footage from the scene showed passengers evacuating the train while rescue workers attended to injured individuals, some transported on stretchers. Reuters was able to verify the location and date of the video from the original file’s metadata.
Local authorities said about 20 people were in relatively serious condition and foreign tourists were among the injured.
Police are investigating the collision between trains operated by Inca Rail S.A. and PeruRail S.A., which mainly transport tourists to the iconic site.
