At least one person is dead and another is injured on Sunday (December 28) after two helicopters collided mid-air before crashing to the ground, in Hammonton, New Jersey, 34 miles (55 kilometers) southeast of Philadelphia, according to authorities.


The Hammonton Police Department said it received a call about an aviation crash involving two helicopters near Hammonton Municipal Airport, where both aircraft crash-landed and one became engulfed in flames.


Police said one person was confirmed dead and another was transported by EMS with critical, life-threatening injuries.


The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said in a preliminary statement that an Enstrom F-28A helicopter and an Enstrom 280C helicopter collided mid-air near the airport with only the pilots on board each aircraft.


The NTSB said it had opened an investigation and that information on victims would be handled by local authorities.
