HOCKEY: Kraken rally late, best Kings in OT to halt 6-game slide

Vince Dunn scored in overtime to lift the Seattle Kraken to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings, snapping a six-game losing streak. Matty Beniers also netted a clutch power-play goal to force extra time, while Joey Daccord made 24 saves in the win.

Vince Dunn scored a power-play goal at 1:21 of overtime to give the Seattle Kraken a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings, snapping a six-game losing streak on Wednesday night.

Matty Beniers tied the game for Seattle with a power-play goal just 26 seconds before the end of regulation. Eeli Tolvanen assisted on both late goals, while Dunn also recorded two assists. Jared McCann also scored for the Kraken, and goaltender Joey Daccord made 24 saves, ending an 0-5-1 slump.

Alex Laferriere and Kevin Fiala scored for the Kings, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end. Goaltender Anton Forsberg stopped 30 of 33 shots for Los Angeles.

The Kraken forced overtime when Beniers redirected a pass from Tolvanen over Forsberg’s shoulder after the goalie was penalized for tripping McCann, who was injured on the play at 19:21 of the third period.

Seattle got another power play in overtime when Adrian Kempe was called for tripping at 1:05. Dunn made the most of the opportunity, blasting a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle off a Tolvanen pass to seal the victory.

The Kings had taken a 2-1 lead earlier in the third period with Fiala's power-play goal at 14:40. Kempe sent a stretch pass to Anze Kopitar at the offensive blue line, and Kopitar fed Fiala for a mini-breakaway. Fiala buried his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Seattle had taken an early 1-0 lead in the second period with a power-play goal at 3:21. Quinton Byfield of Los Angeles broke his stick while killing the penalty and skated to the bench for a change, effectively giving the Kraken a two-man advantage. Dunn then fed McCann for a blistering one-timer from the high slot, which beat Forsberg on the blocker side.

The Kraken looked to extend their lead when the Kings’ Warren Foegele was called for tripping just over three minutes later. However, they turned over the puck just inside the offensive blue line. Los Angeles’ Joel Armia chipped the puck ahead, sending Laferriere on a short-handed breakaway from center ice. Laferriere scored with a backhander over Daccord’s blocker and into the upper left corner of the net at 8:16, tying the game at 1-1.

In roster news, the Kraken placed rookie forward Berkly Catton, their first-round pick in the 2024 draft, on injured reserve earlier in the day. Catton blocked a shot with his right hand late in Seattle’s 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. -Field Level Media/Reuters
