Spring Training Highlights: De Vries Powers Athletics, Twins, Rays, and More Shine in Early Action
Top prospect Leo De Vries homered twice, including a grand slam, to lift the Athletics’ split squad to an 11-7 spring training victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in Mesa, Arizona.
The 19-year-old switch-hitting shortstop also hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, posting his first six RBIs of the spring. Andy Ibanez went 4-for-5 with two doubles from the leadoff spot, while Clark Elliott’s tiebreaking single fueled a four-run eighth inning for the Athletics. For the Dodgers, Andy Pages and Alex Call each hit solo home runs. Starter Justin Wroblewski delivered three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Twins 7, Phillies 6
Gabriel Gonzalez, Minnesota’s seventh-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly as the Twins rallied past Philadelphia in Fort Myers, Florida.
Ryan Kreidler tied the game with a solo homer in the seventh, while Kody Clemens added a two-run triple and a double. The Twins jumped ahead 3-1 in the third before the Phillies took a 6-5 lead with a four-run seventh. Simeon Woods Richardson struck out five while allowing one run over four innings for Minnesota, and Marco Raya earned the win in a scoreless ninth. Otto Kemp homered and added an RBI single for Philadelphia.
Rays 9, Braves 8
Tampa Bay scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, including the game-winning run on a passed ball, to edge Atlanta at Port Charlotte, Florida.
The teams combined for six home runs and six doubles, scoring 11 runs in the first two innings. Ben Williamson and Brayden Taylor homered for the Rays, who overcame starter Logan Workman’s five runs allowed over 2 2/3 innings. For Atlanta, Ben Gamel hit his fourth spring homer, supported by Kyle Farmer, Luke Williams, and Jair Camargo. Bryce Elder gave up five runs over 3 1/3 innings.
Nationals 3, Astros 1
Ronny Cruz, a 19-year-old prospect, broke a tie with a two-run homer as Washington defeated Houston in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The Nationals scored all three runs in the seventh inning and held on behind six pitchers who allowed just one run on three hits. Starter Andrew Alvarez struck out five over four shutout innings. For the Astros, Cam Smith hit a solo homer, and Hunter Brown struck out nine in four hitless innings.
Pirates 9, Red Sox 7
Billy Cook and Nick Yorke each homered and drove in three runs to lead Pittsburgh past Boston in Bradenton, Florida.
Cook went 3-for-3, one triple shy of the cycle, while Marcell Ozuna added two hits and two runs. Carmen Mlodzinski scattered five hits over three innings to earn his second spring win. Boston’s Mickey Gasper and Ahbram Liendo each had two-run hits, while Jake Bennett took the loss.
Blue Jays Split-Squad Action
Toronto 1, Baltimore 0: Jesus Sanchez’s RBI single in the third inning provided the lone run in Sarasota, Florida. Arjun Nimmala went 2-for-2 with a stolen base, and five Toronto pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout.
Toronto 5, Detroit 0: Addison Barger drove in three runs with a homer and a two-run single in Dunedin, Florida. Seven pitchers combined for the second shutout of the day, striking out eight. Josh Kasevich added an RBI double.
Marlins 2, Cardinals 2
Miami tied the game in the seventh inning on an error by St. Louis first baseman Dakota Harris. Griffin Conine homered, while Graham Pauley went 2-for-3 with a triple. Braxton Garrett allowed one run over three innings in his second spring start.
Mets 10, Yankees 4
Mets prospect Carson Benge went 2-for-3 to lead New York rivals in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The Mets scored three runs each in the second and third innings, with nine players recording hits. Freddy Peralta earned the win. George Lombard Jr. and Jasson Dominguez had notable performances for the Yankees.
